Integrated graphics in laptops - Is there life on integrated graphics?

All problems are solved with money. Those problems that cannot be solved with money can be solved with more money. There is only one problem that cannot be solved with money: a small amount of money. But ironically, it is only the lack of money that makes a person's mind wiggle in the most efficient way possible.

Our case is the choice of notebook with integrated graphics card, gaming laptops in this case we are not interested.

"Yes," "But..."

Laptop discrete graphics cards are easier to navigate, for example: the same RTX 3080 in laptops is about 20% cut down on the RTX 3080 in a desktop PC, i.e. RTX 3080 in a laptop = RTX 3070 in a desktop PC. The difference in performance comes from the fact that the laptop's RTX 3080 is smaller:

  • CUDA cores - That is, less computing power of the GPU.
  • Memory bit rates - That is, less data is transferred between the GPU and CPU in a single access cycle.
  • Memory speeds - That is, the video memory runs a little slower.

Laptop integrated graphics cards do not have their own video memory, so they use RAM. The faster the RAM, the more frames per second the user will get.

No single memory cards, just paired ones. Two 8GB cards will be twice as good as one 16GB card. RAM paired with an integrated graphics card should work in dual thread mode, which will give almost a twofold increase in frames per second.

With an integrated graphics card you have to forget about a single memory card.

In addition, a notebook with an integrated graphics card borrows two gigabytes from the RAM. So it is not worth looking at slabs of 4GB DDR4 version with a frequency below 3200 MHz. Saving a couple of dozen dollars is not worth it, because with 8GB RAM to make a laptop candy is impossible. So is there any good from a laptop with an integrated graphics card?

Price to quality ratio

Notebooks with integrated graphics are comparable to consoles of the last generation. In discrete graphics cards there are about 30 Nvidia cards per AMD card, but in integrated graphics the market has long ago defined the favorites: UHD GRAPHICS 610, UHD GRAPHICS 730, UHD GRAPHICS 750, AMD Radeon 680M, RX VEGA 3, RX VEGA 10 and RX VEGA 11. Anything above that is the non-budget segment.

The path of embedded graphics is the path of compromise and flexible graphics customization. Until recently, processors with integrated graphics were not even listed in the recommended settings, but then developers managed to optimize their projects for notebooks without a graphics card.

UHD Graphics does not grab the stars from the sky, but you can get 60 frames per second in the most popular online games.

UHD GRAPHICS 610, UHD GRAPHICS 730, UHD GRAPHICS 750 are the starting point to the world of gaming. The power of such laptops is commensurate with the power of office computers.
Another thing is RX VEGA 3, RX VEGA 10 and RX VEGA 11. With these processors, we can already count on the smoothness of the picture and even check out Cyberpunk 2077...

...But with low graphics settings and only in HD (with a screen resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels). The performance of the embedded processor is also greatly affected by resource-intensive tasks. For example: it is worth visiting a place densely populated by nepis with a large number of light sources - the frame rate tends to room temperature readings...

Conclusions

Laptops with integrated graphics are a solution for undemanding online games with low texture resolution, no 2K shadows, anti-aliasing, and sometimes even with vertical sync enabled. Single-player AAA-projects are clearly not the end of embedded graphics.
